“I’m trying to provide those skills to people to empower people,” she said. “But also these are entry-level outdoor skills and Colorado has a huge outdoor economy, and so if I can give people Leave No Trace, if I can give people wilderness first response, they’re going have a better chance of breaking into the industry.”

The workshops are open to adults as well as high school-age kids across the country and they are, of course, free to attend.”

Recently Kristin Jones (writing for @thecoloradotr Recently Kristin Jones (writing for @thecoloradotrust ) visited the Blackpackers’ Climb Night at @climbcityrock (Colorado Springs, CO) to see more of what we do, in action.

Yesterday, The Colorado Trust ran the article and we think that they did a phenomenal job digging into the experiences that many of our participants find solidarity in.

In this week’s episode, we are once again joined by Patricia Cameron. We catch up on all that she’s been up to since our last interview, including a NOLS mountaineering leadership course in Alaska, a 2022 LASH on the PCT, and a hiker trash prom hosted by her organization, Blackpackers. Patricia also shares a distressing story of being the victim of a hate crime during her PCT hike in Lone Pine, California, in which she caught the entire encounter on video. We play the audio from this incident and get Patricia’s take on exactly what went down, some of her thoughts on the risk and reception of being a hiker of color in rural towns, and why, despite this incident, she has no plans to stop long-distance backpacking. A warning to listeners that the audio from this video is triggering, but I do believe that it’s important for everyone in the community to hear this and get a sense of the depressing reality that still persists for many of our fellow hikers. #backpackerradio #thetrek
Repost from @thereclaimed • Rev Dr MLK, Jr, said Repost from @thereclaimed

Rev Dr MLK, Jr, said a LOT of prolific, powerful, and pertinent things.

A lot.

I know MLK DAY is next week, and right now, some school teacher is teaching our next generation some watered down, white washed version of Dr King’s legacy. Y’all know I’m not about that life.

So here is a very short list of some of the other things Dr King said that resonate so much today.

Because y’all are not about to “content of their character” us to death.
Dr. Rickey Frierson says “I subscribe to the bel Dr. Rickey Frierson says “I subscribe to the belief that every individual and organization can be successful when an inclusive vision, a common goal and a united purpose is established. Because of this, I have dedicated my professional and academic studies to assist and train education leaders and institutions in examining proactive strategies to create efficient and fruitful educational experiences for their diverse students, staff, and faculty.”

Dr. Frierson has spent over a decade presenting internationally and domestically on issues of social justice, diversity and inclusion, and underrepresented student success within higher education.

His research interest centers on institutional accountability and effectiveness in student success and completion at predominantly white public institutions. More succinctly, Dr. Frierson takes pride in assisting administrators, superintendents, principals, professors, teachers, counselors, and institutions in examining proactive strategies to create efficient and fruitful educational experiences for their diverse students, staff, and faculty.

One of the founding board members of Blackpackers, coming from Houston Tx, Dr. Frierson is finally starting to get used to the cooler Colorado weather after just a few years here. Congratulations, Rickey, on your successes at @csuwarnercollege
